That this plant originates from North America tells you that the name Indian Rhubarb refers to pre-Columbian  Americans rather than anything to do with actual Indians.

Closely related to rockery favourites Saxifrages, this damp-lover has large leaves like Gunnera manicata or Astilboides tabularis and pretty clusters of pink and white flowers reminiscent of Bergenias that emerge in spring before the foliage returns.
